  1. What Are The Parts Of The International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) took 10 years and more than 30 missions to assemble. It is the result of unprecedented scientific and engineering collaboration among five space agencies representing 15 countries. The space station is approximately the size of a football field: a 460-ton, permanently crewed platform orbiting 250 miles above Earth. It is about four times as large as the Russian space station Mir and five times as large as the U.S. Skylab.

The idea of a space station was once science fiction, existing only in the imagination until it became clear in the 1940s that construction of such a structure might be attainable by our nation. As the Space Age began in the 1950s, designs of 'space planes' and stations dominated popular media. The first rudimentary station was created in 1969 by the linking of two Russian Soyuz vehicles in space, followed by other stations and developments in space technology until construction began on the ISS in 1998, aided by the first reusable spacecraft ever developed: the American shuttles.

Until recently, U.S. research space onboard the ISS had been reserved for mostly government initiatives, but new opportunities for commercial and academic use of the ISS are now available, facilitated by the ISS National Lab.

A space station, also known as an orbital station or an orbital space station, is a spacecraft capable of supporting a human crew in orbit for an extended period of time, and is therefore a type of space habitat. It lacks major propulsion or landing systems. Stations must have docking ports to allow other spacecraft to dock to transfer crew. International Contributions

Facilities around the world support the operation and management of the International Space Station Credit: NASA - Click to Enlarge
The International Space Station brings together international flight crews and multiple launch vehicles. It brings globally distributed launch, operations, training, engineering, and development facilities. As well as communications networks and the international scientific research community.
Because it is an international program, the space station is even more complicated to operate. Each partner has the responsibility to manage and conduct the hardware it provides.
    Canadian Space Agency (CSA)
Canada provides the resources, equipment, and expertise for the engineering and monitoring of the Mobile Service System (MSS). The MSS is a sophisticated robotics suite that assembled the Station in space, module by module. The CSA also contributes to crew training and astronauts.
    European Space Agency (ESA)
Europe is responsible for two key station elements: the European Columbus Laboratory and the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV). Besides the Columbus and ATV, Europe's scientists and engineers have been contributing other elements, 'equipment and design skills. For example the DSM-R data management system has been a major part of the station's brain since July of 2000. Europe has built Harmony, or Node 2, and Tranquility, or Node 3, which link the station's components, as well as Cupola. Cupola is a dome-like structure that is the crew's panoramic window on space and a control room for astronauts operating station equipment. The European Robotic Arm has also helped the movement of heavy payloads throughout space. The European Space Agency have additionally provided astronauts for the space station.

    Japan Space Exploration Agency (JAXA)
The Japanese Space Exploration Agency has contributed by adding the Japanese Experiment Module 'Kibo', which is the largest experiment module on the ISS. The 'Kibo' is split into two sections: the Pressurized Module and the Exposed Facility. This means that in the Pressurized module there is an airlock. The Exposed Facility allows experiments to be directly exposed to space. JAXA has also added the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV). Astronauts are provided as well.
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration establishes management policies and analyzes all stages of the space station program. NASA has given the International Space Station the Destiny Laboratory Module, Unity, or Node 1, and Quest. When NASA is not sending up its own supplies for the station, it also helps its partners with transporting equipment and other supplies. Many astronauts are often sent to the space station.
Roscosmos oversees all of the Russian human space flight activities. The Zarya, Zvezda, Pirs, Poisk, and Rassvet Modules have been contributed. In 2012, Russia is expected to launch the Nauka Module. Cosmonauts are also provided by the Russian Federal Space Administration.
